Grade 6 Biology

Fall Semester

Topics:

  • Unit 1: Human Body
    • Circulatory system (heart, blood vessels, blood, circulatory systems of other animals, heart rhythm and pulse)
    • Respiratory system (organs of respiration, lungs, breathing process)
    • Reproductive system (growth and development, changes in the reproductive system, male reproductive organs, female reproductive organs)
    • Diseases (organisms that cause disease – viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi, the body's defense against disease, controlling the spread of disease, prevention of insect bites)
  • Unit 2: Food Chains and Webs
    • Source of energy and energy transfer through food chains and webs
    • Transfer of harmful substances through food chains and webs

Spring Semester

Topics:

  • Unit 3: Ecology and Sustainability
    • Human effects on ecosystems
    • Sustainable development (renewable and non-renewable resources, recycling and waste management)
    • Healthy and sustainable lifestyle
  • Unit 4: Environmental Health & Climate Change
    • What is environmental health? (air, water, soil pollution)
    • How pollution affects human health and ecosystems
    • Introduction to climate change (causes and consequences)
    • Greenhouse gases and the carbon cycle
    • Climate and disease (e.g., how warming affects disease spread, insect ranges)
    • What kids can do: reducing carbon footprints, green habits at home and school

Summative Assessment (3 Marks):

  • Unit Test – Ecology and Sustainability

Fall Semester

Assessments:

Formative Assessment (3 Marks):
  • Labeled diagrams of the heart, lungs, and reproductive organs
  • CER writing (e.g., "What happens if the circulatory system fails?")
  • Weekly vocabulary-based activities
  • Disease simulation games
  • Building or analyzing food webs to show energy flow and contamination
  • Engagement and notebook checks
Summative Assessment (3 Marks):
  • Unit Test – Human Body Systems – Covers circulatory, respiratory, reproductive systems, and disease prevention
  • Unit Test – Food Chains and Webs – Focused on energy transfer and harmful substance movement
  • Creative Project – Students create an illustrated comic, model, or PSA explaining a body system or food chain concept

Spring Semester

Assessments:

Formative Assessment (3 Marks):
  • Labeled ecosystem diagrams
  • CER writing (e.g., "How does pollution affect food chains?")
  • Sustainability decision-making activities
  • Weekly vocabulary challenges
  • Roleplay debates or simulations about human environmental impact
  • Analyzing simple graphs of CO₂ trends
  • Carbon footprint reflection sheets
  • Sketching pollution or climate-health cause-and-effect chains
  • Regular engagement checks and science notebook reviews
Summative Assessment (3 Marks):
  • Focuses on human impact, renewable resources, and healthy lifestyles
  • Cambridge Progression Test – Stage 6 – Standardized assessment evaluating science understanding from the full year
  • Creative Project – Illustrated poster series, digital slideshow/video, or short comic/story explaining an environmental health or climate change issue, including realistic solutions or actions
